Q-Switch Laser Machine

The Q-switch ND YAG laser machine is an advanced technology for pigmentation removal, tattoo removal and skin resurfacing. The “ND” here means Neodymium, it is a material which could deliver the 1064nm and 532nm wavelength to the melanin in the skin layers. The laser works on the pigmentation and brings the heat which stimulate collagen production, smoothing out skin texture.

The Q-switched Nd: YAG laser emits a longer, near-infrared ray of 1,064nm that is capable of penetrating into the deeper regions of the skin. Therefore, it is able to destroy deep-seated dermal melanocytes by selective photothermolysis. Q-switched laser can stimulate the proliferation and rearrangement of collagen in the skin, improve the texture and elasticity of the skin, and make the skin smoother and firmer while removing spots.

These 3 types of technology are all good for pigmentation removal. For the pico and Q-switched laser, The main differences are the speed and strength of each machine. Put simply: A Picosecond laser operates at one trillionth of a second, and has a pulse width that is 100 times faster than that of the Q-Switched laser.Fractional CO2 laser may bring pain during and has a longer down time after the treatment. However, the CO2 laser still has its advantage which is CO2 laser has a perfect results on scar and wrinkle removal.

Q-switched laser use the selective photothermal principle. Pigmentation, such as freckles, melasma, age spots, etc., are usually related to the abnormal distribution and accumulation of melanin in the skin. Melanin generates heat after absorbing specific wavelengths of light energy. Q-switched laser emits high-energy pulse lasers of specific wavelengths. (1064nm). The laser has a short pulse duration(nanosecond), this extremely short pulse ensures that laser energy can be concentrated and released in a very short period of time.

When the Q-switched laser beam is working on the surface of the skin, melanin in the pigmentation will preferentially absorb a large amount of laser energy. The melanin that absorbs energy rapidly heats up, producing heat and breakdown the pigmentation without damage the surrounding tissues. This intense thermal effect leads to thermal expansion, fragmentation, and even explosion of melanin particles. The broken melanin particles are then engulfed by macrophages and gradually excreted from the body through the metabolic system.

Active Q-switch laser and Passive Q-switch laser are two types of the Q-switch ND YAG laser, they both work well but still have difference. Generally speaking, an Active Q-switch laser has a better results and higher safety than the passive one.

Differences in working principles

The active Q-switching laser precisely adjusts the losses inside the laser cavity through external active control components such as electro-optic modulators or acousto-optic modulators. These active components can quickly and accurately change the accumulation and release of photons inside the cavity based on preset electrical or acoustic signals, thereby achieving the output of laser pulses.

The passive Q-switching beauty laser relies on the nonlinear optical properties of the saturable absorber to control the pulse output of the laser. The saturable absorber absorbs strongly at low light intensity, and gradually decreases with increasing light intensity. When a certain threshold is reached, rapid light pulse release is achieved.

Differences in parameters

1.Pulse width

Active Q-switched laser machines typically generate narrower pulse widths, typically in the nanosecond range or even shorter, allowing energy to be more concentrated on the target tissue. The pulse width of passive Q-switching machines is relatively wide, mostly in the tens of nanoseconds.

2. Pulse energy

The pulse energy output of the actively Q-switch laser machine is relatively stable and controllable, and can be precisely adjusted according to treatment needs. The pulse energy of passive Q-switching machines is relatively unstable and may have certain fluctuations. Normally, the single pulse energy of Active laser is adjustable, while the passive Q-witch laser could not adjust the single pulse energy.

3. Frequency

The pulse repetition frequency of the active Q-switch laser machine can be flexibly adjusted within a large range. The repetition frequency of passive Q-switch laser is relatively fixed, and the adjustment range is narrow.

Difference in the treatment

1. Treatment of pigmentation

For superficial pigmentation problems such as freckles, coffee spots, etc., both machines may have good effects. But for deep and stubborn pigments, such as Ota nevus, active Q-switching laser machines may have advantages due to their narrower pulse width and higher energy.

2. Tattoo removal

In terms of tattoo removal, actively Q-switched laser machines are usually more effective in decomposing pigment particles, achieving a more ideal removal effect, especially for colored tattoos.

3. Skin damage

Due to the more precise and controllable pulse of the actively Q-switched laser machine, the damage to the surrounding normal skin tissue is relatively small during the treatment process. Passive Q-switching beauty equipment may cause slightly greater thermal damage.

4. Sessions of treatments

Generally speaking, using an active Q-switched laser may require fewer treatments to achieve the desired effect, while a passive Q-switched laser machine may require more treatments.
